Can We Save America by Vigorously Defending Our Faith?

When we read headlines like, “California Town Banishes Christian Church from Downtown Area,” or where high schools in 30 states are being taught the 1619 project that claims the white race is the biggest murderer, rapist, pillager, and thief of the modern world; when we consider the cake maker in Colorado, and the florist in Washington State who have been sued by their state governments for not catering to the homosexual agenda, do Christians see what is happening in America? Does it stir our attention when six Supreme Court Justices decide all religious institutions are prohibited from firing employees who come out as gay or transgender? How about when all the Democrat mayors and governors call dispensing marijuana, selling booze, and keeping abortion services open more essential than religious services? Does it tell Christians anything when some sort of Christian persecution is ongoing in all 50 states?  Well folks, it should not only concern you, it should jolt you into reality.  The truth is religious freedom in America is being methodically destroyed, and your children and grandchildren are going to suffer for it through oppression and persecution.

You might be asking: is Christ the answer? I would ask in reply: do all good things come through the power of Christ? Then He is our answer! Did Christ vigorously express His worldview while He walked on this earth (Acts 18:27-28)? His activism created conflict with Rome and the Jewish religious ruling class--a theocracy. Then Christ expertly used this controversy to establish His platform to push His godly cause--His worldview. His cause was revealed when the word of God became flesh and brought truth and grace (John 1). His truth was broadcast to everyone’s attention because of the controversy and this facilitated discussion of God’s truth. This enabled Christ through the power of God to speak His Truth into the darkness of society to save them from themselves. This is every Christian’s mission statement, and we need to fulfill our mission statement.

How, you might ask?

God has commanded Christ’s disciples to witness with the power of His truth (Acts 1:8) to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). He equipped us with the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, while the Spirit of truth convicts the world of sin. Therefore, our path is set before us, our mission is clear, and now we walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). We put on the full armor of God so we can open our mouths boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for we are Christ’s ambassadors (Ephesians 6:11-20). We do this into every darkness that exists, even the dreaded political market place of ideas. This is what Christ asked us to do!

Christians in America have been failing at opening their mouths boldly. We have handicapped ourselves by labeling certain subjects off limits. We have convinced ourselves to see no evil, hear no evil, and to not speak about political evil, because politics is evil. This is lunacy.

Christians should ask themselves why they and most of their pastors aren’t telling their congregations and America from the pulpit, on Facebook, in tweets, in letters to the editor, on television and radio, and in opinion pieces are not boldly speaking Christ’s truth into and warning of the political attack on Christians. Are we not all the Watchman on the Wall? Is it possible they have historically revealed only “comfortable” truths so they know no reason to start revealing “uncomfortable” truths?

Most of today’s Christians and their clergy are hiding Christ’s truth from the public square for various reasons. They seem to be hoping not to offend anyone by adhering to the façade of a nice gospel. Maybe they are silent praying evil will pass by and not harm them. This is the sin of silence. I call it Christian Ostrichism: burying one’s head in the sand to deliberately avoid speaking Christ’s truth. On the day of reckoning is it possible all these silent Christians and their clergy “will be cast out into outer darkness where people weep and grind their teeth,” (Matthew 8:12)? I hope not!

The Watchman in me compels me to yell, “Christians start being Christ-like and vigorously defending Christ’s worldview in the public square, or we will lose our religious liberty in America!”

We need to become as committed as the people of the world who are enthusiastically defending their worldview. They worship the creature, but the creature knows what Christians seem to be clueless about. The creature cannot be successful without silencing those who follow and witness Christ's worldview. The creature knows the power of the spoken word of God better than Christians and right now sponsors “…a nation void of counsel, nor is there any understanding in them” (Deut 32:28). However, Christians know God’s words, “…shall not return void…” (Isaiah 55:11).

Could fear be the reason Christians are not vigorously pronouncing Christ’s world-view in the market place of ideas? Our activism, of course, will create conflict with many in the secular ruling class because the light of Christ will expose their darkness (Ephesians 5:11). However, like Christ, this will enable us through the power of God to speak His Truth into the darkness of society to save them from themselves. They will hate us, but Christ said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven,” (Matthew 5:10-12).

The worst thing that can happen in America (at least for now) is verbal persecution by those representing the creature. However, when this happens Christians receive Christ’s blessings, and if we honor our commission this gives untold millions the opportunity to be saved and have eternal life. It is then we can avoid being an unprofitable servant that was, “cast into the outer darkness” (Matthew 8:12).
